PUKEKOHE YOUNG VEGETABLE GROWER PORTS OF AUCKLAND VISIT

In August the meeting of the Pukekohe young vegetable growers saw an early morning field trip to visit the Ports of Auckland, where a fascinating tour and presentation was given to the group by Yvonne Theuerkauf.

The port has grown with Auckland city for more than 175 years and is owned by Auckland City Council via its investment arm and operates independently.

The port claims to be the most efficient container terminal in Australasia for speed of loading and unloading ships and is the largest vehicle import port in New Zealand handling nearly 250,000 cars each year plus trucks, buses, farm machinery etc...

The port also handles around 100 cruise ships annually, each cruise visit benefits the local economy by about $1.5 million.

The port employs over 500 people and further estimates that 187,000 jobs are facilitated by the port with nearly three-quarters of the ports inbound cargo destined for Auckland.
